Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) awards contract to Siemens Mobility for supplying baggage handling system in upcoming Terminal 3

Press Release | 9 July, 2008
New Delhi, July 9, 2008 : Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) has awarded Siemens Mobility a contract to supply the baggage handling system for the upcoming Terminal 3 at I.G.I. Airport, New Delhi. The system will have a throughput of more than 11,300 pieces of baggage per hour. A baggage X-ray system for full inspection will also be integrated. The total value of the contract amounts to 36 million euros. Completion of the project is scheduled for March 31, 2010.

The In-line baggage system will help passengers save time, as they will not have to queue up for pre check in luggage x-ray process. The system creates a seamless transition of baggage from passenger to plane without the need for passengers to queue in a separate line for x-ray screening before check-in. It includes a combination of conveyor belts, bar code readers and in-line baggage sorters, which in comparison to the existing practice, allows passengers to precede straight to the check-in counter and receive their boarding pass while the baggage gets checked and assigned automatically. The new in-line process is therefore designed to speed up the passengers’ pre-departure processes without compromising security. This step is part of DIAL's efforts to improve the facilities at Terminals for passenger convenience.

This system will not only provide faster check-in and convenience for passengers but will provide an enhanced level of security technology. To accomplish this, a multi-level scanning process will make certain that the baggage is fully screened and marked along the way. As the passenger deposits his baggage at the check-in counter - a modular system weighs and transports the luggage onto a conveyor belt. Once the baggage is assigned a position on the belt conveyor, it proceeds to a security check point where every bag travels through a scanning system that combines manual and electronic surveillance with X-ray and explosive detection equipment monitored by staff that are certified Security Screeners.

Siemens Mobility is supplying the baggage handling system for the project. Bags can be handed in at 168 check-in desks at the departures level of the terminal, which covers an area of 520,000 m2. For oversize luggage, there will be five desks available. A total of 28 X-ray stations will be integrated in the system so that all baggage can be subjected to a 100% security inspection. The sorting system has been designed for a capacity of over 11,300 bags per hour and has a total length of almost 13 kilometers. Tilt-tray sorters as well as vertical sorters and high-speed diverters will be used. In addition, the system includes make-up carousels. At the arrivals level of the new terminal, twelve baggage claim systems will ensure problem-free distribution of baggage to travelers.

According to estimates of the IATA, the number of passengers in India is expected to grow by an average of 8.6 per cent per year up to 2011. This makes India one of the ten countries with the highest growth rates in terms of passenger numbers. In 2007, 24 million passengers were handled at the airport of the Indian capital and in 2010, 30 million passengers are expected. In order to cope with the rapidly rising number of passengers, four new terminals and a fourth runway are to be built by 2026. As a first step, the new Terminal 3 is due for completion by March 2010. It will have 78 Boarding Bridges for national and international passengers. The terminal is designed to handle the 34 million passengers.
